Chimney Inspections Can Save Lives

What Is a Chimney Inspection?

Chimney inspections are examinations of both the interior and exterior of your chimney. It identifies any issues with structure, functionality and safety.

How often should an inspection be carried out?

As a rule of thumb, it is best to organise for a trained professional to inspect your chimney every year. But don’t wait until winter kicks in and you have your first wood fire. It’s much more practical to get your inspection done in the off-season so you know that it is safe and ready to go at the first cold snap.

Who is best to perform the inspection?

A chimney sweep is an experienced professional familiar with every part of the chimney and they are the best people to call upon to undertake the inspection. An experienced eye knows exactly what to look out for and can review the property from a whole building safety perspective too. Other than a visual inspection, a camera inspection may also be necessary to ensure nothing gets missed, so be sure that the person you hire has all the right equipment.

What does a chimney inspector look out for?

During chimney inspections, close attention will be given to the chimney to ascertain whether there is any damage to its structure. Cracks to the chimney itself as well as the flue are assessed. Birds commonly make a nest in easy to access areas of chimneys, so these will be carefully removed and gaps sealed up.

There is also an examination of the interior to assess the buildup of soot, which could create a hazard. Should it need cleaning, the chimney sweep can also undertake that job.

Have the chimney inspected by a professional chimney sweep

If you are looking to purchase a home with a chimney, make sure you have the chimney inspected by a specialist. A chimney sweep will be able to advise you whether there are areas of improvement or repair that are needed and feel reassured about the safety of the property when winter arrives.

A chimney inspection is not always high on a homeowner’s to-do list, but it can have serious health and safety consequences. A small crack may seem insignificant, but it could actually lead to a fire accident. Regular reviews and chimney sweeping can keep your home safe, leaving you to enjoy your cozy fire on a cold winter’s night.
